European Folk Day – September the 23rd
Himmerland with Nuala Kennedy & Donald Hay
These years, Himmerland is touring in large parts of the world with new music, composed by five distinctive and highly experienced musicians and composers with a background in very different genres, traditions and cultures. Wherever the band appears, they spread joy and enchant their audience, with their completely unique mix of old Danish ballads, terrific fiddle tunes, balanced improvisations, and fascinating new music composed and arranged by the members of the band.
The band’s first CD “New Rootsmusic from Denmark” was the start of the band’s career and was celebrated with a busy “CD-release week”, with concerts at the Danish Tønder Festival, at Alkantara Fest in Sicily, Koktebel Jazz Festival in Ukraine and finally at Harvest World Music festival in Moscow. The album received good reviews and in 2013 was nominated for a Danish Music Award as Danish Folk Album of the Year.
Since then, the band has toured in large parts of the world at festivals, music theaters and clubs, and Himmerland has worked closely with a number of musicians they have met on the tours abroad.
Irish Nuala Kennedy and Donald Hay from Scotland have notably been part of the band’s line up during a number of tours and festivals in New Zealand, Italy, Canada and in England and Scotland. Nuala Kennedy is one of Irish Folk Music’s most important players in these years.
