SUMMARY:Dragon Folk Club session
DESCRIPTION:The Dragon Folk Club offers a weekly sing-around style session. Our sessions on 18th and 25th September will both be within a week of the 4th European Folk Day. \nEveryone is welcome whether they perform or not. Performance can be of any type as long as it’s acoustic: sing\, play\, dance\, tell a story or joke\, recite a poem or monologue. We have our foundation in all types of “folk performance”\, but nothing is excluded. If you don’t perform then that’s fine: be our audience\, join in the banter\, and maybe sing along to a chorus or several. \nYou will find us almost every Friday from 8:15pm in the barn (just past the toilets) at The Bridge Inn\, Shortwood\, Bristol\, UK\, BS16 9NG. \nWe look forward to meeting you.

SUMMARY:11' Festival Le Vie dei Canti

SUMMARY:Melvyn Robinson - Hill Drawings
DESCRIPTION:Paintings inspired by the style and landscapes of chalk hill figures. \nMelvyn Robinson (1933-2025) created a series called Hill Drawings comprising of paintings of a specific area in South Yorkshire\, regarded by the artist as their homeland; locations such as Kine Moor\, Woolley Farm\, Fox Holes\, the Hill Forts\, and Boggard Wood. In this region\, there is a legend of a black cockerel guarding a golden cradle in an underground passage\, a tale that might pre-date Christianity and Roman occupation. \nThe paintings incorporate a drawing style inspired by hill figures such as the Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset\, the Uffington White Horse in Berkshire\, and other Celtic\, Viking\, and Anglo-Saxon sources\, while depicting contemporary landscapes. Accompanied by poems and folksongs\, the Hill Drawings explore themes of generation\, aggression\, survival\, and humanity’s place within the animal kingdom. \nMelvyn Robinson\, born in Barnsley\, South Yorkshire\, in 1933\, was an artist\, musician\, and educator. He studied at Barnsley College of Art\, Manchester College of Art\, and Keele University\, where he developed a passion for integrating arts and education. Robinson taught at various institutions\, including the College of Education in Cheshire\, Hackney College\, and the London Institute\, while also teaching art and music in London schools. His first solo exhibition was held at the Acme Gallery in Covent Garden in 1978\, followed by shows at venues such as the Cooper Art Gallery\, The Air Gallery\, and The Mile End Art Pavilion. He also participated in group exhibitions with Whitechapel Community Arts and engaged in gallery education\, fostering community creativity. \nRobinson’s work\, often accompanied by poetry and music\, has been displayed in galleries including Mall Galleries\, Bankside Gallery\, and Hackney Museum. A talented musician\, he played with jazz bands like ‘The Temperance Seven’ and composed for theatre productions\, notably for Dreamer\, the 1980 musical about a family running a textile sweat shop in London’s East End. \n  \nExhibition open from Tuesday 15 September 2026 to Monday 11 January 2027. \nOpen during Cecil Sharp House opening hours  – 9am to 11pm most days. \nIn the stairwell at Cecil Sharp House. \nFree entry

SUMMARY:Workshops for 6th graders
DESCRIPTION:Workshop: POLICE\, THIEVES\, AND MUSIC\nCrime and criminal investigations are among the world’s most popular topics for songs. For hundreds of years\, stories about crimes and their investigations were preserved in long ballad-style songs. Fascinating crime stories traveled thousands of kilometers in song and were often translated into many different languages. In this workshop\, we’ll explore a few famous sung crime stories from Finland and Europe and create our own fun adventure song called “Cops and Robbers” in the spirit of Finnish musician\, writer\, cultural provocateur M.A. Numminen. \nThe workshop is organized as part of Taidekaari’s activities. \n

SUMMARY:SiberWytch — Songs from the Northern Otherworld
DESCRIPTION:SiberWytch — Songs from the Northern Otherworld\nLive from Norway for European Folk Day \nFor European Folk Day\, SiberWytch invites audiences into a dark\, intimate and atmospheric musical journey through the old stories of the North. \nBroadcast live from Norway\, this acoustic performance brings together voice\, lyre and zither in original interpretations of Old Norse mythology\, Scandinavian folk tales and the strange beings who have haunted the Nordic imagination for centuries. Through song and storytelling\, SiberWytch reawakens the world of the völva\, the forest spirits\, the draugr\, the huldra\, the norns\, the trolls\, the dead\, the dreamers and the gods who still whisper through mountains\, rivers and winter woods. \nRather than recreating folk music as museum material\, SiberWytch approaches tradition as something living\, breathing and enchanted. Her music is rooted in folklore\, myth and memory\, but shaped through a contemporary\, personal and poetic voice. These are not simply songs about the past — they are songs about the invisible threads between landscape\, ancestry\, grief\, magic and survival. \nPerformed live with minimal instrumentation\, the concert creates an intimate ritual-like atmosphere: the ancient sound of strings\, the human voice\, and stories carried across time. The lyre and zither give the performance a raw\, archaic quality\, while SiberWytch’s interpretations open the tales to a modern audience. \nThis special live-streamed performance celebrates the richness of European folk traditions while giving voice to the shadowed\, mysterious and mythic heritage of Norway and the wider Nordic world. \nExpect songs of: \nOld Norse myth\nNordic folk tales\nMythical creatures\nWomen of magic and prophecy\nThe dead and the unseen\nForests\, fjords\, mountains and memory\nLyre\, zither and voice \nSiberWytch is the artistic project of Norwegian writer\, singer\, folklorist and performer Lena Heide-Brennand. Her work explores mythology\, folklore\, ritual\, history and the strange beauty of the old stories that refuse to disappear. \nFor European Folk Day\, SiberWytch sings from Norway — not as a reconstruction of the past\, but as an invocation of it.

SUMMARY:LI MATTI DI MONTECO' al GRAN GALA' DEL PREMIO ITALIA DANZA
DESCRIPTION:On 25 September 2026\, from 3:00 p.m. to midnight\, at the Palariviera in San Benedetto del Tronto (AP)\, Italy\, an entire afternoon will be dedicated to the European Folklore Day\, thanks to the association Li Matti de Montecò\, within the event Grand Gala of the Italia Danza Award. \nThe folkloric group “Li Matti de Montecò” from Montecosaro (MC) was founded in January 2007 by a group of young people driven by  he desire to promote\, enhance\, and keep alive the popular traditions of the Marche region. Some members had previously belonged\, in the 1970s and 1980s\, to the renowned—now dissolved—group Val di Chienti. \nThe group’s name derives from an ancient local saying: “A Montecò chi non è matto non ce lo vò e chi non è matto bè\, non ce lo vò pè ‘gnè”.  This expression dates back to the time of the plague\, when Montecosaro is said to have welcomed all evacuees within its walls.  Over the years\, the legend has remained alive and is still recalled whenever this affectionate nickname is mentioned. \nThe group is composed of around 30 members\, ranging from 3 to 80 years old\, and since 2009 it has been affiliated with F.I.T.P. – the Italian Federation of Popular Traditions\, which includes more than 600 folkloric groups nationwide. \nTheir performance features music\, songs\, and dances from the popular tradition of the Marche region. Among all the dances in their repertoire\, the one that best represents the group is undoubtedly the Saltarello\, the quintessential courtship dance. The show also includes dances such as the Raspa\, Pirulì\, Castellana\, and Gajinella. Other dances\, though originating elsewhere\, have long become part of the Marche tradition\, such as the Quadriglia\, Polka\, Tarantella\, Mazurka\, Manfrina\, and Waltz. \nAt 4:00 p.m.\, Li Matti de Montecò will hold a workshop and a folk dance performance open to the entire community\, in anticipation of the evening award ceremony at 9:30 p.m.\, the “Italia Danza Award”\, conceived by Maestro Ermanno Croce. \nFor the association\, this will be both a formal recognition and the tangible proof of a commitment carried forward for twenty years with dedication\, passion\, and love for tradition. On this occasion\, the values of both European and Italian folklore will be highlighted\, also thanks to the participation of TED Maria Elena Chiodo.
