SUMMARY:The Irish Festival of Oulu
DESCRIPTION:The 18th Irish Festival of Oulu will take place in Oulu\, Finland from September 24-28\, 2025. Described by fans as a “fun\, hospitable and versatile” Irish culture event\, the most northerly Irish culture festival in the world has organized a versatile and inclusive program of world class traditional Irish music\, storytelling\, dance\, music workshops\, dance courses\, multiple daily Irish music sessions\, Irish food and much more amongst new and old friends. \nThis year’s main event is critically acclaimed band Lúnasa\, described by The Irish Echo as “The hottest Irish acoustic band on the planet.” Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Having since sold over a quarter of a million records and performed over 2\,500 shows across 36 countries\, Lúnasa has won multiple awards and become one of the most influential bands in the history of traditional music including collaborations with singers Natalie Merchant\, Mary-Chapin Carpenter\, and Tim O’Brien and high-profile concert venues such as Carnegie Hall\, The Hollywood Bowl\, the Bercy Arena Paris and Glastonbury Festival have helped broaden the band’s audience and cement it place at the forefront of contemporary Irish music. \nAlso performing at the festival are Pólca 4\, a group of musicians led by Pádraig Ó Sé from the heart of West Kerry known throughout Ireland and Europe for their high energy shows and vigorous arrangements\, mixing local polkas and slides with jigs\, reels and songs. The band’s arrangements breathe new life into these time-honoured melodies\, infusing them with their unique interpretations while preserving the essence of the traditional tunes. \nSystir\, led by Irish composer and Artistic Director Michael McGlynn\, are one of Ireland’s most sought-after vocal ensembles since ANÚNA\, performs in the beautiful and historic Oulu Cathedral. Systir creates a new and eclectic musical voice that explores the myriad shades and hues of the female voice blending modern vocal and instrumental techniques with ancient vocal performance practices to create a unique ethereal ambience. Drawing from the wealth of indigenous songs from across Europe\, including sean-nós\, Systir connects ancient vocal styles with contemporary storytelling. \nAshplant\, a highly talented band from Tampere with a repertoire that spans of lively jigs from County Clare\, spirited hornpipes from Galway\, and energetic reels from Sligo\, perform in Oulu for the first time. \ninSpiral Dance Company Finland\, the country’s biggest Irish dance school\, take the stage for a special performance of traditional Irish jigs and reels with fresh modern moves that’s full of passion\, power\, and pure joy. \nOral storytelling is a highly popular event at the festival with numerous storytelling events by Irish storytellers Órla Mc Govern and Niceol Blue and local storytellers Anna-Kaisa Kettunen\, Brent Ó Caiside\, Osmo Hakosalo\, and Anu Vehkomäki. \nOpening day of the festival features Nordic Night\, an evening program this year focusing on oral folklore and traditional music from Oulu. Stories from the North focuses on a northern theme with stories from Oulu\, \nNorth Carolina and County Donegal will be hosted by storytellers Brent Ó Caiside and Osmo Hakosalo followed by a concert by NOPE\, a four-piece band active in the Oulu folk music and dance scene whose music combines virtuoso fiddle\, ethereal vocals\, and a catchy rhythm. \nNumerous music workshops by band members of Lúnasa and Systir are offered as are two Irish dance courses and a children’s dance course. Highly acclaimed Irish dancer Siobhan Butler returns to teach and further develop the ever so popular sean nós dance course and Nelli Sinisalo\, an experienced Irish dance teacher from Tampere\, will teach the beginner Irish dance course and children’s dance course. As well\, there will be a dance performance by the dancers of inSpiral Dance Company from Tampere. \nNumerous cultural discussions\, music workshops\, daily traditional Irish music sessions\, and an Irish Cooking and Dining Experience\, Festival Clubs and much more are on during the world’s northernmost Irish cultural festival. \nAdditionally\, we will publicly launch Cultural Kaleidoscopes\, our 2026 European Capital of Culture event which becomes the northernmost ever Irish cultural event part of an official European Capital of Culture program.

DESCRIPTION:Potteries Folk Club Team receives grant by Community Foundation for first Fenton Folk Day \nIt’s official! The first Fenton Folk Day will happen – and it will take place on Saturday\, 20th September 2025 in and around the iconic historic building of Fenton Town Hall. Organised by the Potteries Folk Club\, the folk day is aiming to celebrate the rich and diverse musical heritage of Stoke-on-Trent and the country – and the European Folk Day which i officially on 23rd September! It will be a day of music\, song\, dance\, storytelling\, poetry and many other related activities. “We’re delighted to have received generous funding from the Community Foundation to support the event and to especially celebrate the Centenary of Stoke-on-Trent gaining city status”\, says Jason Hill\, the Folk Club treasurer who also had the idea for the first Fenton Folk Day. \nFirst concert headliners announced! \nFenton Folk Day will honour local acts and will also bring nationally recognised musical acts to the Potteries\, who will all perform in two blocks of afternoon and evening concerts. Amongst the headliners of the concerts in the Ballroom are award-winning singer-songwriter Daria Kulesh who will also host a children’s workshop\, our very own internationally touring Stoke-and-Stuttgart duo Paul Walker & Karen Pfeiffer\, FATEA band of the year award winners The Lost Notes from Birmingham and the club is very happy that they could secure the one and only Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies who counts as one of the finest in the folk world. – now aded: Jaywalkers\, Ben Robertson\, Nick Degg and more. \nThe evening concert will be followed by a ceilidh (barn dance)\, led by local musicians with a ‘caller’ to guide dancers through the dances\, and so encouraging greater participation. \nWorkshops\, singarounds\, sessions and outside dance displays are free of charge \nThe Folk Day will also feature a series of free-to-attend inclusive workshops for children\, families and the wider community. These will be led by both local and visiting specialists in their field\, with experience of communication to varied audiences. The workshops will include singing\, songwriting\, playing music\, storytelling\, poetry\, and dancing. \nThroughout the day there will be Morris and other traditional dancing performed by ‘sides’ from the city and county. This will take place on Albert Square outside Fenton Town Hall. There will be opportunities for people to join in free-to-attend music and song sessions at the Town Hall and other local venues. These will include family-focused activities and activities aimed at encouraging adult audiences to try something new. \nTickets \nAdvance tickets (to 31st August) for £42\, thereafter the price will be £45. DESCRIPTION:Rootstown en CC Het Gasthuis stellen met veel trots de 7de editie van BUSKERfestival voor. Deze muzikale wandeling\, die deze keer doorheen een deel van de Aarschotse binnenstad trekt\, is een historische en muzikale reis waar de liefde voor muziek en onze stad in overvloed aan bod komen.\nIn kleine groepen trekken officiële stadsgidsen op pad\, langs historische panden\, vertellend over onze stad en haar legendes. Bij elke tussenstop staat er een muzikant uit de vriendengroep van de Rootstown-stal klaar om de deelnemers te beroeren met 100% akoestische liedjes.\nAfsluiten doen we op de binnenkoer van CC Het Gasthuis met\, hoe kan het ook anders\, een dijk van roots-band\, eveneens uit de vriendengroep van die alom gekende Rootstown-stal. Voor de mensen met een hongertje\, na de wandeling\, voorzien we trouwens een lokale foodtruck aan CC Het Gasthuis. \nPeddlin’ Pete (B)  \nPEDDLIN’ PETE is het soloproject van zanger- gitarist Piet Vercauteren. \nGepakt met enkel een akoestische gitaar\, zijn stem en stampbox neemt hij zijn publiek mee op een reis door de traditionele blues- en ragtimewereld. Onderweg pitstopt Peddlin’ Pete al wel eens in de rock ‘n’ roll\, bluegrass\, funk\, hardrock en zelfs disco. Hij kleedt bekendere nummers uit en weer aan en doet dit met grootse kunde en klasse. Eigen creaties maken het plaatje af. Rauw en recht uit de onderbuik\, met humor gevleugeld\, innemend\, hartveroverend\, danslustwekkend. Een one man band zoals u er zelden één beleefde. \nDieter van der Westen (NL)  \nDieter van der Westen wisselt in zijn muziek groovy Amerikaanse uptempo folknummers af met trage Tom Waits-achtige ballads en folk-soulachtige songs. Hij speelt zelfgeschreven werk met hier en daar een folk traditional. Dieter van der Westen speelt naast zijn eigen band ook al 25 jaar met de Nederlands Marokkaanse formatie Kasba en werkte ondermeer samen met BLØF\, The Lau\, Frank Boeijen en het Metropool Orkest. \nIn 2016 bracht hij zijn eerste album met eigen geschreven werk Old Oak Tree uit wat door Heaven Magazine betiteld werd als “een van de beste Americana albums van het jaar.” Het bandalbum Me and You (2018) met de Dieter van der Westen band kreeg lovende recensies in Nederland en Vlaanderen. En ook de opvolger Honesty of The Hopeful uit 2022 met meer soulvolle Americana en Indiefolk songs werd goed ontvangen. Damusic zegt over het in Paradiso Amsterdam gepresenteerde album: “We kunnen alleen maar zeggen dat dit album zonder blozen de oceaan mag oversteken.” \nIn 2024 schrijft Dieter van der Westen nieuwe nummers voor een nog te verschijnen soloalbum. \nKatja Kruit (NL)  \nCountry songs met een liefde voor steelgitaar. \nKatja Kruit is zangeres en steel gitarist en brengt nu voor het eerst haar eigen songs. Ze heeft een voorliefde voor countrymuziek zoals die bedoeld is: drie akkoorden en de waarheid. Geïnspireerd door Bonnie Raitt\, Dolly Parton en the Chicks schrijft ze country liedjes met een vleug bluegrass en blues. \nCountryliefhebber Kruit heeft Amerikaanse roots en leerde Dobro spelen in de USA. Ze werd verliefd op de klank van deze slide gitaar\, die in de country en bluegrassmuziek een zangerige\, resonerende klank geeft. Ze leerde zichzelf de basis en volgde workshops bij grote ‘dobroïsten’ zoals Rob Ickes en Sally van Meter\, en ontmoette haar held\, dobro-koning Jerry Douglas. \nTerug in Nederland nam ze zich voor om de country en bluegrass verder te verspreiden en speelde ze met verschillende bands op allerlei festivals\, zoals het Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival en het Knapsack Festival Delft. \nWay Up North (NL)  \nWay Up North\, opgericht in 2019 in Groningen\, is een jong Americana-duo dat de prachtige geluiden van de Appalachen op hun eigen unieke manier probeert te herinterpreteren. De band bestaat uit songwriter en gitarist Thijs Vrolijk\, die subtiele countryliedjes met aangrijpende teksten schrijft\, en multi-instrumentalist Alan Jozua\, die mandoline\, banjo\, bas en achtergrondzang verzorgt. \nHun geluid is een unieke mix van bluegrass\, Appalachian folk\, country en soms zelfs een beetje rock-‘n-roll. \nNu voor de allereerste keer in België. \nAfsluiter op de binnenkoer\nReedy River String Band (USA)\nGREENVILLE\, USA\, bluegrass/newgrass  \nReedy River String Band speelt foot-stompin’ music in three-part harmony! Afkomstig uit Greenville\, South Carolina\, brengt de band een frisse kijk op Appalachian rootsmuziek doordrenkt met elementen van rock-‘n-roll en jambandmuziek. \nReedy River String Band heeft de afgelopen jaren het zuidoosten van de Verenigde Staten stormenderhand veroverd met hun frisse kijk op Appalachian rootsmuziek. In 2023 trad Reedy River op\, op verschillende opmerkelijke bluegrassfestivals\, waaronder het Earl Scruggs Music Festival (EmmyLou Harris\, Infamous Stringdusters\, Greensky Bluegrass) en het Charleston Bluegrass Festival (Leftover Salmon\, Molly Tuttle\, Keller and the Keels). \nHet geluid van Reedy River is moderne bluegrass met voetstampende elementen van jam en rock-‘n-roll\, geïnspireerd door de verschillende tour- en opname-ervaringen van de leden. In elke show wisselt multi-instrumentalist Sterling Waite mandoline\, viool\, banjo en mondharmonica af om een scala aan texturen aan de liveoptredens van de band toe te voegen. Met Rush Morgan op gitaar en Mark Dye op contrabas zijn alle drie de leden songwriters en leadzangers\, waardoor er een diepgang en variatie aan origineel materiaal ontstaat die verder gaat dan de relatief korte tijd dat de band samen was. \nSinds de oprichting in 2021 heeft Reedy River String Band in 2022 hun titelloze debuutalbum uitgebracht en sindsdien twee singles uitgebracht\, “My Grass is Blue” en “Punkin Brown” in 2023. Hun studio-releases zijn op meerdere radiostations gespeeld. Унікальним є й те\, що бабусі не просто співають автентичні пісні\, а під час співу вправно прядуть\, микають мички\, змотують пряжу\, тчуть на ткацькому верстаті.\nВ автентичних піснях\, які виконують бовсунівські бабусі\, мудрість та висока мораль українського народу принесена нам через століття. В них оспівується доля народу\, виснажлива праця\, кохання\, стосунки \, між людьми\, нелегке вдовине і сирітське життя. Бовсунівські бабусі співають веснянки\, петрівки\, жниварські пісні\, обрядові весільні пісні\, колядки\, застільні пісні. Жодна з них не знає нот\, але співають вони в секунди\, терції\, квінти.\nМісцевий поліський діалект\, на якому бабусі спілкуються та виконують свої пісні\, робить їх неповторними. Через все життя вони пронесли дух і колорит часів своєї молодості\, а їх одяг\, який бабусі носили ще як були дівчатами – це зразок прекрасного національного Поліського одягу. \n  \nУ село Бовсуни до бабусь приїжджають фольклористи і студенти з України\, багатьох країн світу\, щоб навчитися співати від них\, записати пісні у виконанні колективу.\nПро колектив «Бовсунівські бабусі» знято документальний фільм.
