DESCRIPTION:To mark the occasion of the third European Folk Day (September 23\, 2025)\, a parking lot concert will be held in Bad Kreuznach for the third time on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025—once again in cooperation with neighbourhood initiative schildHood and Dirk Bleisinger’s Tonkaffee. Following the success of the last two years\, the Tonkaffee will once again set up shop that day in the parking lot of the Baptist church on Carmerstraße from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. – so anyone who enjoys handmade folk music and crossover is cordially invited! \nPerformers include local heroes Lost & Found (Indie\, Folk\, Americana) and singer-songwriter Alex Schmeißer\, Bingen-based solo artist Marina del Hey (folk cover and own material) as well as Celtic folk rockers Why didn’t they ask Evans? from the Hunsrück region. As last year\, admission is free (a hat will be passed around to cover the costs for the musicians and the Tonkaffee). \nMusicians from the region who are interested in playing themselves are welcome to register in advance via schildHood.kreuznach@posteo.de or simply drop by on the day and see if there is still a slot available. SUMMARY:Áššu - Sami Yoik
DESCRIPTION:Áššu means “glow” in Northern Sami  language– it is not just a name\, but a clear signal of what awaits\, a musical encounter where ancient yoiks are carried forward by a glow that has never faded. The trio consists of Ulla Pirttijärvi\, one of the most prominent Sami voices of our time\, together with two innovative musicians: Kenneth Ekornes on percussion and Olav Torget on guitar and ngoni. \nThe music in Áššu rests on traditional yoiks and newly written compositions by Ulla Pirttijärvi-Länsman. The music and arrangements reflect a musical axis from the Arctic Circle via Brazil to West Africa\, where Kenneth’s background in Brazilian rhythms and Olav’s anchoring in West African traditions take the yoik to new dimensions. The result is a living fabric of rhythms\, sounds and stories. \nÁššu was already internationally acclaimed with her debut album\, which was awarded the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik and highlighted in the British Songlines. The new album “Luohteniegut” was released in February 2025.

To honor this event\, the blue flag of the European Heritage Days was consecrated in the church\, while the celebration was enriched by performances from the Suiti Ethnographic Ensemble “Gudenieku suiti” and the kokle players’ group “Četri vēji” (Four Winds)\, filling the church with songs and a special festive atmosphere.

It was an extraordinary time for both of them\, as their shared education continues to shape their approach to music-making: exploratory and creative. They have lived in Pencader\, a small Welsh-speaking village in the county of Carmarthenshire\, for over thirty years. The landscape consists of rolling hills\, fast-flowing rivers\, streams\, and ancient mixed woodlands. Many of their songs and melodies reflect the history and cultural life of the area: agriculture is still important; there was once a thriving wool industry\, the railway\, and\, to the west\, the sea. The songs also reflect the movement of people from the once impoverished countryside to the industrial centers for work. It is music rooted in place and language\, but its themes of love\, loss\, joy\, and struggle are universal.\nCeri Rhys Matthews has recorded over 25 CDs\, performing solo\, with the band Fernhill\, which he founded in 1995\, and as a duo with Julie Murphy.\nJulie Murphy is a Welsh singer-songwriter with a long career. TIME OUT magazine has declared her a “must-see and hear” singer. Her remarkable voice\, ghostly beautiful one moment and dark and mysterious the next\, has led her to collaborations with John Cale and Robert Plant\, among others. In 2016\, she was nominated for the Underwire Festival’s Best Composer award. DESCRIPTION:An educational and entertainment event on the theme of Ukrainian and Celtic singing traditions\, and a concert by the band Monday Shanty in the setting of a pirate party. \nfull description: \nWhat we have:\n1) International Talk Like a Pirate Day fell on Friday;\n2) European Folk Day fell on Tuesday;\n3) Monday Shanty band sings only on Mondays;\n4) September equinox almost fell on Monday;\n5) We learned a new song and found a stash of rum; \nWhat’s the result:\nPirate equinox with rum and singing! \nThe Monday Shanty band offers to celebrate the turn of the sun to winter in the company of lovers of sea songs\, Celtic ballads\, Ukrainian polyphony and rum! \nAs part of #europeanfolkday2025\, the group will hold a singing workshop. We will learn one Irish and one Ukrainian song and immediately perform it all together under the guidance of Antonina Vinnyk.
