SUMMARY:Klangkosmos NRW: Wales - Julie Murphy & Ceri Rhys Matthews
DESCRIPTION:Julie Murphy & Ceri Rhys Matthews are among the pioneers of Welsh folk music. They met at art school in 1979. It was an extraordinary time for both of them\, as their shared education continues to shape their approach to music-making: exploratory and creative. They have lived in Pencader\, a small Welsh-speaking village in the county of Carmarthenshire\, for over thirty years. The landscape consists of rolling hills\, fast-flowing rivers\, streams\, and ancient mixed woodlands. Many of their songs and melodies reflect the history and cultural life of the area: agriculture is still important; there was once a thriving wool industry\, the railway\, and\, to the west\, the sea. The songs also reflect the movement of people from the once impoverished countryside to the industrial centers for work. It is music rooted in place and language\, but its themes of love\, loss\, joy\, and struggle are universal.\nCeri Rhys Matthews has recorded over 25 CDs\, performing solo\, with the band Fernhill\, which he founded in 1995\, and as a duo with Julie Murphy.\nJulie Murphy is a Welsh singer-songwriter with a long career. TIME OUT magazine has declared her a “must-see and hear” singer. Her remarkable voice\, ghostly beautiful one moment and dark and mysterious the next\, has led her to collaborations with John Cale and Robert Plant\, among others. In 2016\, she was nominated for the Underwire Festival’s Best Composer award. Her solo album\, “Every Bird That Flies\,” was included in MOJO’s list of the ten best folk albums of 2016. \nJulie Murphy – vocals\, shrutibox\nCeri Rhys Matthews – wooden concert flutes

SUMMARY:Klangkosmos NRW: Clare Sands
DESCRIPTION:Landscapes & Soundscapes from Ireland\nClare Sands navigates with unique power and creativity though the legacy of her ancestors’ Irish music. She combines traditional music with contemporary sounds and themes that inspire young and old\, the brave and the adventurous. Her family roots lie in County Wexford in the Republic of Ireland\, a region settled by Vikings\, and in Northern Ireland. At the age of three\, she began learning traditional Irish melodies on the fiddle from her father Seamus. Her mother Susan later introduced her to the blues. She studied music at University College Cork UCC and graduated with a Master degree with distinction in composition and creative practice from the Irish World Academy. Since then\, she has been electrifying audiences at her performances around the world with her groundbreaking “Fearless Folk” style. In 2022\, her first own album ‘Uncategorized’ was released\, which earned her a nomination for “Best Folk Singer” at the Irish Folk Awards.\nShe is accompanied by the young multi-instrumentalist Cian McGrory on the uilleann pipes and low whistles. He comes from County Down and also from a musical family: his mother is the well-known songwriter Brigid O’Neill\, while his father Bara and his aunts Clodach and Orla are well known in the traditional folk music scene. In 2024\, Cian was awarded the prestigious Gradam Ceoil TG4 scholarship as the best young musician of the year by an independent jury. \nClare Sands – fiddle\, guitar\, percussion\, vocals\nCian McGrory – uilleann pipes\, low whistles \n#europeanfolkday  #europeanfolkday2024
