European Folk Network (EFN) is proud to announce the fourth edition of the European Folk Day, taking place on Wednesday 23 September 2026 — the day of the autumn equinox in the Northern Hemisphere — with a full programme of celebrations running from 18 to 27 September 2026.
The choice of date is no coincidence. At the moment when day and night stand perfectly balanced, European Folk Day is rooted in the natural rhythms that have inspired traditional arts communities for centuries. It is a season of gathering, of harvest, of celebration.
Since its launch in 2023, European Folk Day has grown into a committed pan-European movement. The inaugural edition brought together 226 events across 32 countries, 104 musical tracks from 28 countries, and 26 European Broadcasting Union radio stations. Each year the movement has expanded further — across Europe and beyond, with events now taking place on other continents as traditional arts communities around the world join the celebration.
Traditional music, dance and storytelling represent a living, breathing part of Europe’s cultural identity — a source of joy, connection and shared humanity that transcends borders, generations and backgrounds. Folk arts bring people together. They speak the language of peace, of community, of belonging. They are rooted in the land, in local traditions and in the kind of human-scale values that matter more than ever in today’s world.
Europe’s traditional arts are as diverse as the communities that practise them — communities that have grown, travelled, settled and flourished across the continent, bringing with them rich and distinct artistic traditions that are now woven into the fabric of European cultural life. European Folk Day celebrates all of that — proudly and collectively.
European Folk Day is open to everyone — individual musicians and dancers, bands, ensembles, festivals, clubs, conservatoires, community groups, radio stations, broadcasters, journalists and bloggers. Participation can range from a single social media post tagged #europeanfolkday to a full festival programme. There are no barriers to entry, no membership requirements, and no limit to creativity.
Artists, dancers, promoters, festivals, educators, students, bands, community groups, conservatoires – whatever you are doing on or around 23 September can be part of the European Folk Day. Just register your activity/event on the website map and database.Media outlets and broadcasters are invited to feature traditional arts artists, dedicate airtime to folk music and dance, or cover European Folk Day events in their region. The EFN Music Repository offers a rich selection of tracks available for broadcast.
Cultural institutions and policy makers are encouraged to recognise and support the events taking place in their communities, and to engage with the European Folk Network on the broader agenda of visibility and recognition for the traditional arts sector.
All individuals and organisations wishing to register an event can do so via the Participate page at europeanfolkday.eu. Registered events are listed in a searchable database and featured on an interactive map of Europe. EFN actively promotes all registered events to its European network and media partners.
